ASEAN-India Free Trade Area (AIFTA) — in force since 1 January 2010 Overview. ASEAN-India Free Trade Area (AIFTA) is in force since 1 January 2010. The goods agreement applies between India and ten ASEAN states: it took effect on 1 January 2010 with Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand and with the other seven between June 2010 and August 2011. Services and investment are covered by two separate agreements signed in November 2014, and a review of the goods agreement was still being negotiated in July 2026. An AIFTA certificate of origin (Form AI) issued by the exporting country's issuing authority (rule 13 of India's 2009 origin rules); in India the Export Inspection Council issues it for all goods, MPEDA for marine products and the Textile Committee for textiles and made-ups, on application through trade.gov.in. The certificate is valid for twelve months from the date of issue and must be submitted to the importing customs within that time (Annexure III, paragraph 14 of the rules).
